Breakdancing will be a discipline at 2024 Paris Olympics : Akanksha Gupta

MO News Desk: With an aim to promote the 'Breakdancing' sport culture in the region, in the backdrop of the dance form recently having been included as a medal event in 2024 Paris Olympic games for the first time, city based 'Viva Dance Studio' organised a breakdancing championship titled 'Cypher Battle Ground Vol I' at  the Chandigarh Institute of Film and Theatre.

Akanksha Gupta, the organizer and MD of Viva Dance Studio said, “The main motive of holding the championship was to provide a platform to young talent and groom the enthusiasts for the upcoming Dancesport event in 2024 Olympics. After receiving recognition as an Olympic sport - 'breakdancing' sport has become more popular among the B-Boys and B-Girls, who are now dreaming of grabbing medals at the Olympics. Now is the time to provide a professional platform to talented breaking dancers.”

It is imperative to mention that it’s for the first time that the tricity has hosted a mega event of the breakdancing sport in which around 100 dancers took part and it was witnessed by nearly 200 people. The dancesport event was judged by renowned break dancers Ramesh Yadav, aka B-Boy Tornado, who is the winner of Red Bull BC One 2019 and Breezer Vivid Shuffle 2019 and Abhibhav Sharma aka Bedroc Boogie.

Ramesh Yadav, aka B-Boy Tornado, who before the competition had also taken a workshop for the young break dancers at Viva Dance Studio, said, “I congratulate and thank Viva Dance Studio team for organising such a great event and promoting the ‘breakdancing’ culture in the country. Though hip-hop and breakdancing originated in the US, there is no dearth of ‘breakdancing’ talent in India. We need to create training infrastructure as most B-Boys and B-girls come from underprivileged sections.”

In the 'Breaking one-on-one' dance challenge, B-Boy Finalwar  clinched the 'Cypher Battle Ground' championship, while B-Boy Icon was the runner up. In 'Rep your style' dance battle category B-Boy Tornado emerged as the winner, while Aman Rana was adjudged runner up. The winners were given trophies and cash prizes.

Akanksha Gupta further said, “Our country has an immense talent pool but lack of resources and sponsorship casts a dark shadow over the dreams of many B-Boys and B-Girls as they reportedly come from humble backgrounds. Currently the breakdancing sport is at a nascent stage in India, which direly needs government intervention and sponsors assistance to grow the culture in the country.”

After winning the trophy, an elated B-Boy Finalwar said, “This win means a lot to me. The competition wasn’t easy as many great dancers came from different parts of the country. Finally my hard work paid off and I won the trophy.”

It is noteworthy that four B-Girls also participated in the competition and as many as 10 B -Girls attended the event as part of the audience. BW
